At Hunker Down Shop, we believe preparedness is not about expecting disaster around every corner. It is about taking practical steps today so that when something does go wrong, you are not starting from zero.
Hunker Down Shop is a husband-and-wife business built by Tom and Connie. We have been married since 2001, and we are living proof that two people do not have to be exactly alike to make a pretty good team.
When we decided to build a business we could operate together from home, we wanted it to be something practical and useful. Tom’s military background and interest in preparedness helped shape the direction, and Hunker Down Shop began to take form.
As the store grew, so did our idea of what it should stand for. We did not want to build a business around panic, doom, or convincing people that catastrophe is waiting around every corner.
We wanted to build a store for real life.
Real-life preparedness can be surprisingly ordinary. It is a flashlight that works when the power does not. Clean water when normal service is interrupted. A roadside kit already in the car. An emergency radio when communications are limited. A few days of food on the shelf. Backup power for something important. A first-aid kit where you can actually find it.
HOPE IS NOT A PLAN.
We hope the lights stay on. We hope the storm misses us. We hope the car starts when we turn the key.
But a little preparation gives you something hope can’t — a Plan B.
We’re a small business, and we think that’s something worth preserving.
Behind Hunker Down Shop aren’t layers of departments, boardrooms, or corporate committees. There are two people — Tom and Connie — building a business together and trying to create the kind of preparedness store we’d feel comfortable recommending to our own friends and family.
We may not be the biggest preparedness store on the internet. That’s not what we’re trying to be.
We’d rather build something useful, trustworthy, and a little more personal — one customer at a time.
For us, being veteran-owned is more than a label. Tom’s military service helped shape the values behind Hunker Down Shop: preparation, responsibility, and taking care of what needs to be done before it becomes an emergency.
Those values fit naturally with preparedness. You cannot control every storm, power outage, roadside problem, or unexpected event. But you can make sure you are a little more ready when one happens.
We are proud to be a veteran-owned business. At the same time, we don’t believe that should be used as a sales pitch. We would rather earn your business by offering useful products, straightforward information, and the kind of service we would want to receive ourselves.
Veteran-owned is part of who we are. It’s not the only reason we hope you’ll shop with us.
Our mission is simple: help people feel more prepared, more capable, and more confident when the unexpected happens.
We believe preparedness should be practical and manageable. It can start with something as simple as a flashlight that works, clean water on hand, a well-stocked first-aid kit, or a backup way to stay informed when the power goes out.
From emergency food and water supplies to lighting, communications, backup power, safety gear, and everyday preparedness essentials, our goal is to make it easier to find useful products in one place.
You do not have to prepare for everything overnight. Start with what matters most to you, build from there, and know that every practical step leaves you a little better prepared than you were yesterday.

We believe in straightforward information, practical products, and treating customers the way we would want to be treated ourselves. We will not try to frighten you into buying something you do not need, and we will not pretend that every emergency requires a bunker and ten years’ worth of beans.
Preparedness is personal. What makes sense for one household may be completely different for another. Our job is to give you useful choices and clear information so you can decide what makes sense for you.
And while preparedness is serious business, we don’t believe preparing has to feel gloomy. So if an occasional Sasquatch, suspiciously well-prepared Santa, or other unexpected character wanders into Hunker Down Shop…well, that’s probably us having a little fun. 😁
